For 8 months I woke up, made content, posted on my status, posted on my page, said good morning lovers, used 20 hashtags, and made zero sales from strangers. My friends would say nice one, but my account balance was saying something else. I almost deleted my page and went back to only offline sales. Then I changed 3 things. In the next 21 days I made 11 sales from people who had never met me before.
Let me tell you what nobody tells you when they tell you to put your business online. Posting is not business. Posting is just noise until you fix how people find you, trust you, and pay you. I was making noise every day and calling it business. That is why I was tired and broke at the same time.
If you are posting every day and your DM is still dry, or people ask price and disappear, you are not lazy. You are making the same 3 mistakes I made. Stay with me.
Mistake One: I Was Selling On The Internet Like I Sell In My Compound
Offline, if you know me, you trust me because you see me. You see my shop, you see my face, you greet me. Online, nobody knows you. Nobody owes you trust. I was posting like everyone already knows me and trusts me. I would post a picture of my product and write available, DM to order. Who are you? Why should a stranger send you 15k first?
That was my first mistake. I was asking for money before building trust. Online, trust comes before money, not after. When I checked my page, I had no proof. No reviews from real customers, no video of me packing an order, no before and after, no face behind the business. Just fine pictures I downloaded and my price list. People thought I was a scam page. Not because I am a scam, but because I looked like one.
What I changed: I stopped posting only product. I started posting proof. One day I posted a screen recording of me packing 4 orders, with the customer’s area blurred but real. I posted one voice note review from a customer who said the soup lasted 5 days. I posted my own face holding the product with my shop background, not a fine studio background. That one week, three people who had been viewing my status for months finally said, okay let me try one pack. They were waiting for proof, not another fine flyer.
Mistake Two: I Had No Single Place Where People Could Understand And Pay
Second mistake nearly killed me. If someone was interested, I would confuse them to death. I would say check my highlights, then send them a price list PDF, then send my account number, then ask for delivery address, then ask for screenshot of payment. By the time we finished, the person was tired and said I will get back to you. They never got back.
Buying online must be easy, not an interview. People buy when they are in the mood. If you make them wait or chat for 15 minutes, the mood dies.
What I changed: I created one link. Just one. When you click it, you see what I sell, how much, what people said about it, and a button to pay or order. No long story about my mission and vision. Just what is it, how much, how do I get it, can I trust you. That link is now in my bio, in my status, and when anyone asks what do you sell, I send only that link. No more 10 messages. One link. My order process went from 14 messages to 2 messages. Sales went up because stress went down.
Mistake Three: I Was Invisible To People Who Were Already Searching To Buy
This one pained me the most. I was posting every day to people who already follow me, begging them to buy, while people who were actively searching to buy what I sell could not find me at all.
For example, people search every day, where to buy ready to cook soup in Yaba, affordable small chops in Accra, thrift vendor in Nairobi that delivers. If you do not show up when they search, you do not exist to them. I was not showing up anywhere. I was only showing up to my 300 followers who were tired of seeing me.
What I changed: I listed my business where people search. I claimed my free business profile that shows on search and map. I added my real area, Yaba Lagos, what I sell, my hours, and 5 real photos of my work, not downloaded photos. I added my one link there too. In 9 days, two strangers found me through search, not through my status. One searched soup delivery near me, saw my profile with 8 reviews, clicked my link, and paid. I had never spoken to her before. That is the power of being findable versus just being active.
I also wrote one short post that answered a question my customers always ask me. How do you store this soup for 5 days without it spoiling. I posted it on my page. That post still brings me customers today because people search that question and then see I sell the solution. You do not need 20 posts. You need one post that answers a real question and proves you know what you are doing.
What Happened After I Fixed Those 3 Things
I did not build a big website. I did not pay 200k to a designer. I did not run ads. I fixed trust, fixed payment, fixed findability.
Trust: Real photos, real reviews, my face, packing videos. Not fine graphics every day.
Payment: One link where people can see price and pay without chatting me for 15 minutes. People pay at 11pm while I sleep now. Before, if they wanted to buy at 11pm, they had to wait till I woke up and many changed their mind by morning.
Findability: Free business listing that shows when people search near me, plus one helpful post that answers a real question. That brought me strangers, not just friends viewing my status out of pity.
In 21 days after fixing those, I made 11 sales from people who never met me before. Not because my product changed. My product was always good. Because the way people could find me, trust me, and pay me changed.
If Your Online Business Is Not Selling, Do This In 48 Hours
Stop posting for 2 days and fix the foundation. Posting more will not fix a broken foundation. It will just make you more tired.
Today, gather 3 real photos of your work, not fine edited ones, real work. Gather 2 reviews, even if it is just a WhatsApp screenshot from a happy customer. Record one 30-second video of you packing or doing the work, with your voice. Put those on your page and pin them to the top. That is your trust corner. Anyone who visits your page will see proof first, not just price list.
Tomorrow, create one link that holds everything. What you sell, how much, reviews, and how to pay or order. No long about us story. Just what is it, how much, how do I get it. Put that link everywhere, in your bio, in your status, and stop sending 10 different messages when people ask what you sell. Send one link.
Then go and claim your free business profile where people search. Add your area, what you sell, your hours, your real photos, and your one link. Ask 5 past customers to leave a short review there. That is how strangers will start finding you without ads.
Putting your business online is not about posting every day and hoping. It is about making it easy for a stranger to find you, trust you, and pay you without stress. If you fix those three, posting becomes easier because your posts now have somewhere to send people to buy, not just to say nice one.
Your business is good enough. Your product is good enough. But if people cannot find you, trust you, and pay you easily, they will buy from someone else who made it easy, even if their product is not as good as yours. Make it easy this week.
